How to Deal with Set Backs
Even the most dedicated athletes will experience a set back now and again. Life can get messy, and setbacks come in all shapes and sizes. Anything from illness, injury to job schedules, and vacations can throw you off your groove.
And that’s OK!! You have not failed!
Setbacks happen, and the quicker you are able to acknowledge it for what it is and carry on, the better off you will be!
Once you have decided that you are ready to get back to it, your approach might depend on the reason for the setback. Whatever the reason though, the first step is always:
Check-in with your goals!
You have to keep the eye on the prize because your why is what will always be your driving force. You started this journey for a reason and it is important to keep that in mind.
Setbacks because of Health Issues
Healthy issues might be one of the biggest hurdles that any of us will ever deal with when it comes to staying fit. Whether it’s illness or injury it might bring your whole routine to a dead stop and quickly.
There are two approaches to dealing here.
Either you have A) sustained an injury to one part of your body (ie broken foot or sprained your wrist) or B) you have an injury or illness that affects your overall wellbeing.
If it’s A) the best way to deal is to work your way through it! If you have a shoulder injury, you might still be able to do some lower body and core work. Or if you have injured your lower body, you can maybe try some chair workouts. It might not be everything that you were doing before, but something is better than nothing. Staying consistent will help improve recovery time and make it easy to get back to it when you are healded.
If it’s B) then take it easy and take care of yourself the best you can. Try when you can to move (short walks, chair/bed workouts, etc).
If you are in recovery now please make sure that you take it slow! You are not expected to jump back into exactly what you were doing pre-health issues. Work with rehab professionals and follow their guidance when possible.
Not getting better – sometimes that happens. Chronic illness and pain and shake your life to the core and be a huge adjustment to deal with. Set Backs Because of Big Life Changes
Life is unpredictable and changing all the time. We should never expect it to stay the same, but for some reason, most of us are shocked every time there is another shift!
If 2020 has taught me anything, it’s to always expect the unexpected.
The best way to deal is to plan ahead if possible!
– Make sure that you have a flexible routine and a backup plan.
– Have a workout or activity in mind for all different types of days.
– Do what you can, when you can, and know that you are doing the best you can.
– Know that it is ok to modify your goals and your plan as needed!
If you are currently on the downward slide and looking to get back onto the right path, these are the steps I suggest to get you started:
– Sit down and write down your goals! Be Specific. What exactly do you want.
– Double-check that your goals are realistic! Don’t go to big to fast. Start where you are in your journey!
– Make a plan – decided what you want to do and when you will do it. Make it an appointment with yourself! You are worth the time and dedication.
– Just START. Don’t wait for Monday, next month, new years, etc. The time is rarely ever going to be right, and when it comes to working on your health, the best time is always right now!

Your journey will be at least 80% mindset.
You need to want what you are working towards, have a plan to get you there, and the dedication to show up for yourself.
